Since the terrorist attack of 9/11 that devastated the country, the U.S military has been in Afghanistan fighting against terrorist groups, like the Taliban and ISIS. President Biden has begun plans to pull forces out of the region. This move is causing controversy because many people feel that this is giving terrorists a sign that America is weak and afraid. However, this move is really doing the opposite.
According to an article by CBS News, “Biden announces full withdrawal of all U.S troops from Afghanistan by 9/11” (April 14) by Melissa Quinn and Kathryn Watson, Biden said in an article, “With the terror threat now in many places, keeping thousands of troops grounded and concentrated in just one country at a cost of billions each year makes little sense to me, and to our leaders. We cannot continue the cycle of extending or expanding our military presence in Afghanistan hoping to create ideal conditions for a withdrawal, and expecting a different result. I am now the fourth United States president to preside over American troop presence in Afghanistan — two Republicans, two Democrats. I will not pass this responsibility on to a fifth.”
President Biden pulling troops out of Afghanistan after a two decade long war will help America in so many aspects. It could cut down military spending, so that the billions of dollars put into the military every year can help advance technology and provide more things for the citizens of the United States.
The Commander in Chief of the United States has made a tough decision, but the people that live in Afghanistan deserve to run their country. American troops were sent there to push back terrorist groups and take down Bin Laden. That goal has been achieved, and ultimately, there is no reason for us to stay in Afghanistan. The country should focus on other important things that will help America move forward.
According to an article in The U.S. Dept. Of Defense website, “Biden announces full U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan by Sept. 11” (April 14) by Terri Moon Cronk, “The United States will be formidable if it focuses on its future challenges and not those in the past. We need to strengthen our alliances and work with like minded partners to ensure that the rules of international norms that govern cyber threats , and emerging technologies that will shape our future. We need to fight battles for the next 20 years, not the last one.”
Many Americans are scared of pulling out of Afghanistan. They are afraid that our enemies will see this as a weakness and that the Taliban and other terrorist groups will begin to grow again. However, as Biden said the Taliban is at a very weak point and our enemies will not see us advancing in technology and as a country as a “weakness”.
In order to be united and bring more peace to the world, America also needs to strengthen alliances and ensure that in the coming battles, America will have the advances and back up to fight what may be coming.
