Nobody should control the majority of wealth when there are millions living a nightmare below the poverty line.
According to the World Bank, 712 million people live under the international poverty line. The international poverty line is defined as living off less than $2.15 per day. Think about this: Everyday 712 million people can only use around $2.15 for food, water, shelter, and clothing. Meanwhile, the extremely wealthy sit with a net worth of billions. To me having this much money is unreal. I believe that these billionaires should reallocate their wealth to help the far less fortunate who are living on the edge.
The U.S Census finds there 38 million people living in poverty, or 11.1 percent. 327,000 people, or 0.1 percent, are homeless. While these may seem like small numbers really think about the fact that each one of these numbers you see is people. People like you.
Now imagine being someone who is homeless or living in poverty and being in a country with 813 billionaires who all make up a net worth of $5.7 trillion. Wouldn’t you wish for one of these people to reach out and offer help?
Like the Census report, a 2022 UN report found that 828 million people are affected by global hunger. The UN are well known for responding to crises across the globe and helping those most desperate in need. One of the global relief programs they run is the World Food Program (WFE). This group’s goal is to help feed the millions of starving people across the world. And back in 2021, the organization reached out to a very well-known billionaire for some help.
David Beasley, the head of the UN food agency, made a claim on twitter that only 2 percent of Elon Musk Wealth, $6 billion, could save about 42 million people dealing with world hunger. Musk responded by saying he would donate that much money if the WFP would show him how they would use that money to solve world hunger. The WFP then responded on their website with a clear outlined plan as to what they would do with all this money that Musk will donate to them. The problem is, Musk never gave them the money. I understand that this is his money to use, and this won’t really solve world hunger, but this donation is still life or death for some people.
It’s easy to look at Musk and hate all Billionaires and think they all are crooks, but most aren’t like this. People like Musk are not common, but they do exist. Extreme Billionaires should donate their money for a good cause, because in the future, it could mean the lives of millions are saved.
