The medical field is infamous for a few specific things, the difficulty and competition of it. Since these jobs are so notoriously well paying, people are always trying to get ahead of one another. Along with that, medical schools are almost always at the higher end of tuition costs so it would be best to get your money’s worth if you do plan on attending. This is why it is important to get steps above everyone else early on in your academic career.
If you have younger siblings who are currently attending Davis, there may be a way for them to get ahead of the game. There is a club there that was started by current Stevenson student Antonio Cholagh. This club revolves around the medical industry with the hopes of the students taking part in it in the future.
“The whole point of it is to teach the junior high kids a little bit more about the medical field” Cholagh said, “If they’re interested, to kind of get them to join our medical programs here at Stevenson or the Utica Health Academy.”
The kinds of activities done here are similar to what you would actually be doing in the real world according to junior high school student Shuna Zhen.
“We recently just had a blood typing lab where they had to test fake blood and figure out what their type was,” Zhen said. “After, we learned about different blood types and the corresponding transfusions.”
Cholagh added how the club days usually begin with a short lesson and are followed by a short activity to do with what you learned so you can get a hands-on experience. Sometimes, however, students participate in labs that reflect real tasks they would be doing in the medical field.
Students like Zhen find that because of the more corroborative and active nature of these activities.
“My favorite things to do in medical club are the labs,” Zhen said. “I like doing hands on activities. I also like socializing with my peers and working together on the labs.”
Although some people may not want to spend their time after school doing even more school related activities, Zhen said she is always looking forward to the next meeting.
“I always look for meeting because I want something to do after school and also my friends are in it which makes it super fun to learn things together.”
Eventually, there will come a time when faced with the important choice of choosing your career path. It is very important to be prepared for whatever you may choose to do. Zhen elaborates on how the club is helping her prepare.
“I do plan on being in the medical field. I would like to be a dentist when I grow up. This club is definitely helping me with my future. I get to learn the basics of what you would do in the medical field, and I love it.”
