For centuries, people around the world have celebrated Christmas. Though, it’s not a shock that people believe that the holiday has taken on new meaning. I believe Christmas has evolved from celebrating Jesus’ birth to the values joy that come with the season. Which, I believe, is the answer to the often-asked question; what is the meaning of Christmas?
One thing I see during the cold winter months is the longevity that Christmas has. Christmas is not as much of a one-day celebration as it is a feeling you get during the winter season. This is often called Christmas spirit or Christmas cheer. It’s an inspiration you get to be a good person. Many Christmas songs are sung about it, such as “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” It says, “…but the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you sing right within your heart.” This idea of a universally shared positive feeling appears in many pieces of holiday media. From songs, movies, books and even games; Christmas cheer will often shine through all holiday media like the twinkle of Christmas lights.
Another thing I feel Christmas is centered around is being with loved ones. While keeping in touch with your family is important all year, I notice during the holiday season, it seems family bonding increases. Something I notice in my family is that we often get together throughout the year, though during winter, we see each other a lot more. I find that, with our more frequent visits, we share a lot more memories of the holiday season.
Christmas is a holiday celebrated by many, with just as many meanings. I believe Christmas isn’t about the presents under your tree. To me, it’s a seasonal joyfulness. It’s a chance to give back the warmth you feel as you look at the lights during the cold winter and a smile you share with your family as you create precious memories.
