Being involved in the Detroit Thanksgiving Parade isn’t new for Stevenson High School; however, for the new members in the marching band, it is. People can help support the band by tuning in on Thanksgiving Day. The process of participating in such an event involved submitting a video of a previous performance by the band with some additional paperwork. This will be their first time on television.
The band is in safe hands with their director and teacher, Michael Yaros, who has had plenty of experience in leading parades with earlier marching bands . The band has been practicing the fundamentals of parading and learning music.
“This year alone, the Stevenson band has marched in 4 parades, with two more on the schedule,” Yaros said. “We’re well-prepared for this.”
Having been in the marching band for 2 years, Marcella Mashou ’27 said she is growing nervous about being seen on television for something this big. Especially since her parents will be watching her at home, she is very mindful of her actions and how they represent her and Stevenson in this parade.
“I am really excited to be on television,” Mashou said. “I think this is a once in a lifetime experience that not many people get to have.”
Seeing her child grow up in the marching band has made Nahreen Mashou, Marcellas’s mother, very proud of her daughter. This is a huge opportunity for many, and she shares this sentiment. “I feel very excited that she is able to do this with her friends.”
“It has paid off, and I am sure it will continue to benefit her in many other ways outside of this parade,” Nahreen Mashou said.
