It seemed like yesterday when sophomores had three seasons of football to enjoy every fall. But they blinked into their senior year and suddenly every game under the flood lights of Runkel Field gets close to the last Friday Night Lights and last of the lasts.
Friday night football games are not the only thing seniors will miss in the upcoming year though. Senior year is hard because they will have to step outside the high school bubble and soon embrace a new territory of college or work. Both are equally terrifying in the aspect of being placed in a new setting where nothing is as it should be.
Seniors face many last moments, such as spirit week, prep assemblies and Homecoming. School activities give students the opportunity to spend time with friends in the bleachers enjoying hot dogs and popcorn, and rooting on the team. Seniors will soon say goodbye to friends going in separate directions.
As Anna Capazolli said in her article from The Odyssey, “Senior Year From A High School Senior’s Perspective” (2016) “As a senior, I think one of the most important parts of your year is to make as many memories as you can. Go to the Friday night football games (every single one), attend Homecoming and take lots and lots of pictures, attend basketball games and every other sport you can, go to your school’s talent show or charity events, and most importantly, go to prom.”
Sports are one of the many ways that seniors can meet with the underclassmen, cheer on their sport and celebrate their Titan pride. By doing so, they create a legacy for the underclassmen to continue these traditions once they are gone. Underclassmen look up to the seniors for spirit and mindset. The only setback about being friends with a senior is underclassmen will eventually be hugging them goodbye at the end of the school year.
