As spring break approaches a bunch of students are deciding if travel advisories and news of cartel activity are worth continuing their vacation plans in Mexico.
Evan Hart 26’, a student planning a trip to Cancun, knows about the recent news regarding cartel leaders but he is still set on traveling to Mexico. With some concerns from his family, Hart believes the popular tourist destination remains safe for visitors.
Hart talked about how the news of violence has reached his family they are aware of the distance between the resort areas and the cartel shootings and violence.
“My family was a little bit nervous but they’re on the other side of the country. We’ll be alright. I haven’t seen any airport shutdowns around Cancun, so it feels like our side is safe right now.”
For many students, the lack of refund options makes it difficult to pivot plans last minute, even when faced with intimidating headlines about the cartel.
“I probably won’t even notice. I spent like a thousand dollars. I can’t just get a refund and go again. I won’t even think twice about it while I’m there because I’m sure I’ll feel safe at the resort.”
However, it does not share the same level of comfort, especially those who have seen increased security firsthand.
Huner Kosnow’26, a senior who went on a trip to Tulum, noticed a significant shift in the atmosphere compared to previous years. He said there was a noticeable increase in patrols near popular tourist spots.
“It was definitely different this time. You’d be anywhere and see trucks of military police driving with large weapons. It didn’t ruin the trip; it was kind of cool to see.”
Kosnow added that while he felt safe, he was much more cautious about leaving the main resort areas after dark than he had been in the past.
Kaela Renee, who was originally looking at flights to Puerto Vallarta, decided to cancel the trip entirely after reading the latest U.S. State Department Level 2 travel advisory.
“I just didn’t think the stress was worth it. Spring break is supposed to be about relaxing, not checking the news every hour to see if the airport is still open or if there are roadblocks on the way to the hotel.”
