The musical arts section of Steveson, the choir, band, and theatre. All lack one thing from what I’ve seen, proper funding.
Money that could go to theatre and band especially are sent to other programs such as sports. I feel as if this money should be partially divided so the Arts programs can be financially stable.
Being in the choir, I’ve noticed a couple of times where we’ve lacked things that we could use to improve how we do. I’ve heard from theatre students that there’s a lack of funding to buy equipment for the shows, a lack of costumes that are good quality and a lack of set items.
Following this, the band, the most expensive of the three, don’t get the funding they should. Instruments are expensive and need to be cared for; the band can’t afford to buy new instruments efficiently due to a lack of funding. Because of a lack of funding, they can’t have better instruments, flags for the color guard, or props.
All these arts are forced to run fundraisers just to get by sometimes, and it seems that those fundraisers still then are constant and need to be year-round by those willing to help. I believe that funding as of now is bearable, but not by much.
It’s the money they need that goes into other programs, like sports or MADE. I just believe that more money should be sent to the Arts if the school wants them to stay afloat and prepared.
