With bins filling up and donations stacking high, students and clubs across the school have taken the lead in giving back to the Sterling Heights community through a series of student-run fundraisers this school year.
So far during the 2025–26 school year, students have organized a sock drive, canned food drive and Toys for Tots donation, all aimed at supporting local families and individuals in need. The efforts are largely student-led, using school clubs and classes as platforms for community outreach.
One of the most impactful events was a schoolwide sock drive organized by Jordan Hilla ’26 to support people experiencing homelessness.
“In leadership, students can pick projects,” Hilla said. “I knew I wanted to help my community, and going into colder, wet weather, socks are a big necessity.”
Over four weeks, students collected 10 large bags and three smaller bags of socks and toiletries, which were donated to those in need.
“I was happy with any amount of donations,” Hilla said. “Anything makes a difference.”
The project was supported through the Leadership class, led by teacher Mrs. Lucas, who said the drive reflects the purpose of the course.
“I love the part of my job that allows me to help students be successful,” Lucas said. “When a student wants to give back, I will do whatever I can to help.”
Lucas said the sock drive is the first of what she hopes will be many student-led fundraisers sponsored through the Leadership class.
The success of recent efforts has also inspired other students to consider leading their own projects. Karlos Sharak ’27, a member of National Honor Society and Key Club, said he hopes to organize a fundraiser in the future.
“I would be collecting money for children who have illnesses and diseases,” Sharak said. “This cause touches my heart since it makes me feel sad thinking about other kids who have rare illnesses and can’t do things like other kids can.”
Students said the school provides resources and opportunities that allow them to take initiative and make a meaningful impact through charity work and fundraising.
