On Saturday, Jan 31 the HOSA regional conference took place at Fraser High School. Those who took part in the competition were able to put their months of studying to use against multiple other high schools in Michigan.
Students applied themselves to their event and while not everyone from Steveson won, the experience was worth the time. Especially to those who will be moving up to the state competition.
Being in her first year of HOSA, Kinza Akram ’27 chose Medical Law and Ethics as her event. For this, Akram said she read a few books for study material as well as online sources such as Quizlet.
“I was really excited, you know, to communicate with new people, to see how everything would go,” Akram said.
While she enjoyed learning about the law, Akram said she would choose a different event, for example, Clinical Nursing, for her next year of HOSA.
“I feel like learning a lot, learning new knowledge, and discovering new things, was worth it,” Akram said. “Even though I didn’t make those dates, I felt like it was still a nice experience.”.
Compared to Akram, student Bianca Tolentino ’27 said she is going to stay with the same event that won her gold, Life Support. She spoke of her own experience when she went into Frasher.
“It was very fun I got to see how it was for my first time going to regionals,” Tolentino said.
She was also nervous about her test but her preparation for it has come through over the past couple of months.
“I felt very happy and excited that I got first place. I was happy my parents got to see me first,” Tolentino said. “I am going to keep studying to remember every step to make me feel more confident in my event.”
Having been the HOSA adviser, Amanda Blitz said she felt that everyone did great in their event despite not everyone getting in the top 5.
“I think everyone brought their best effort and tried their hardest and really did a great job representing Stevenson,” Blitz said.
While you don’t have to be a part of the competition in HOSA, Blitz’s added that the event brings a new outlook on the event you choose.
“I think being a competitive member of HOSA, it takes on a new level,” Blitz said.
“The social aspect of being part of HOSA is fantastic, but I think the real experience comes from being a member and experiencing that competition.”
