On Jan. 13, Stevenson hosted an opening ceremony for the Rick Bye Fieldhouse. In attendance was superintendent Robert Monroe, coach Rick Bye himself, and many other important figures in UCS’ athletics. The room is the result of renovating the old weightroom, and it features a large center turf, walls lined with weight racks, and a huge window facing the baseball field.
The fieldhouse offers students and athletes the resources to train or practice as much as they need. Currently, the racks and weights are being used for the weight training class, run by Jonathon Price.
“I personally think this was a good investment from the school for kids, students, athletes, and everybody else. I really think it was a good use of funds,” Price said.
The fieldhouse will be able to accompany, train, and improve Stevenson’s athletes, so they can prosper in future competitions.
“It’ll be able to make our athletes fitter, faster, and stronger,” Price said.
Briann Herrera ’26, who’s in weight training, gives his hopes for the room’s future.
“I feel like the football players definitely need a new training ground,” Herrera said. “I feel like the class of the next years will definitely love this too.”
The room underwent a massive transformation from the old poolroom, but now, it’s shiny and brand-new, ready for everyone to use it.
“It was, like, the lightning was bad and there was dead equipment everywhere. It was just dirty and bad, but this one is clean and new,” Herrara said. “I just love it; the equipment is so high quality too. There are benches, squat racks, everything.”
Since it was a big investment on the school’s part, people may question if it was worth the price. However, Marlando Merdau ’27 assures that it was worth the cost.
“I think it was worth it because there’s definitely a lot of people that go to the gym outside of school, but if not, there’s [the weight training class] with all the new gym equipment, Merdau said. “Everything is good that I think it would help other people.”
